Earthquakes, hailstorms, and floods. It's been quite a year for disasters here. The most recent event was flash flooding throughout the region, which came about from days of heavy rain.
The Mirror Foundation
Our foundation was affected, with waters coming down the valley, overflowing the pond, crossing the road, and streaming down the small brook that runs down the side of our main access road. Damage, whilst not extensive, has had an effect - parts of the road have crumbled, in turn undercutting the gate foundations, and a portion of the retaining wall (which we built following the last major floods four years ago) has collapsed.
Ban Huay Khom
The main village, a few minutes down the road from us, was hit more badly. As four years ago, a flash flood smashed into the village in a matter of minutes, leaving destroyed rice crops in its wake, before overwhelming around twenty houses which are situated in the path of the flow. The level reached up to a metre in some houses, and many household items were ruined - beds, clothing, furniture - or caked in a layer of mud.
The villagers came together, supported by the local fire department, as well as our volunteers and staff, to help move possessions out of the houses and then begin to clean up. One eye was kept on the sky above, but more expected rain failed to arrive, and the afternoon was bathed in sunshine as the community worked together.
